It&#8217;s now age 30 for men and 28 for women.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Kids come later too<\/strong>:&nbsp;&nbsp;Over the same time period, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr51\/nvsr51_01.pdf\">mean age of the mother<\/a>&nbsp;at the birth of her first child has risen 5 \u00bd years.  (see below on why mean is an OK measure here).<\/li><li><strong>Cultural and economic factors drive the marriage \u201cdelay\u201d<\/strong>:&nbsp;&nbsp;Some people choose to live together without getting married.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is up from almost no one in 1970, to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2018\/11\/cohabitaiton-is-up-marriage-is-down-for-young-adults.html\">10% of 25-34 year olds<\/a>&nbsp;today.&nbsp;&nbsp;Social attitudes toward the need to marry, and early, have changed substantially.&nbsp;&nbsp;Economically, women say they want to marry employed men.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, among never-married 25-34 year olds, the ratio of employed men to all women has dropped from about 1.1 in 1970 to 0.9 in 2012.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In other words, there aren\u2019t enough \u201cqualified\u201d (loaded concept) men available.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Implications<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These findings suggest that marriage and birth age trends drivers may be reducing the savings rate.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We already know Millennials are \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/market-wisdom.com\/index.php\/2020\/01\/21\/the-gift-that-keeps-on-taking-the-cost-of-boomerang-kids\/\">boomeranging<\/a>\u201d back home due to financial difficulties.&nbsp;&nbsp;Less financial stability probably means less savings than previous generations at that age.&nbsp;&nbsp;Psychologically, pre-marriage Millennials may not take savings as seriously as married couples.&nbsp;&nbsp;Therefore, if they marry and have children later, they are going to be later to the savings party.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is only the first part of the analysis of demographics on savings rate.&nbsp;&nbsp;Still, already this suggests that working with Millennials on saving early in life may be even more important than with previous generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The small print<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The marriage data is from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/data\/tables\/time-series\/demo\/families\/marital.html\">US Census<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;The childbirth data is from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nvsr\/nvsr68\/nvsr68_13-508.pdf\">National Vital Statistics<\/a>&nbsp;reports.&nbsp;&nbsp;Note that the marriage data is&nbsp;<em>median<\/em>&nbsp;age, the childbirth data is&nbsp;<em>mean<\/em>&nbsp;age.&nbsp;&nbsp;The two sources usually report on these different calculations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Analysis of some median vs. mean data for childbirth age shows the numbers aren\u2019t very different and show the same trend so I\u2019ve used the readily available mean childbirth age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/market-wisdom.com\/index.php\/sign-up-for-cool-weekly-insights\/\">Sign up for the weekly insight email!<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Background In previous posts we\u2019ve looked the dual challenges that Americans&nbsp;spend more&nbsp;and&nbsp;save less.&nbsp;&nbsp;The next series of posts look at&nbsp;why.&nbsp;&nbsp;This first view looks at the marriage and birth age trends that may be postponing the point at which Americans \u201csettle down\u201d and start saving.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Are people postponing marriage and having kids?
