the workforce.\u00a0\u00a0This presents a huge risk to many households\u2019 ability to retire comfortably.\u00a0\u00a0But with the pandemic came a gusher of money into the pockets of Americans.\u00a0\u00a0Initially, this led to a big jump in the savings rate.\u00a0\u00a0Have Americans continued to save, or is the savings rate tanking again?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Regrettably\u2026yes:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The savings rates has dropped back down to 8%, a pre-pandemic rate.\u00a0\u00a0In January of 2022 it dropped even further, to 6.4%.<\/li><li><strong>Spending is the highest\u2026ever<\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0In the fourth quarter of 2021, American households spent $4.1 trillion.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>This is a new record.\u00a0\u00a0It\u2019s driven most by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/market-wisdom.com\/index.php\/2022\/02\/24\/6-reasons-your-spending-is-the-highest-ever\/\">jumps in spending<\/a>\u00a0on cars, food, housing, and health care.<\/li><li><strong>The pandemic \u201cslowdown\u201d lasted only one quarter:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The popular perception is that for much of the past two years we\u2019ve been holding off on spending.\u00a0\u00a0The reality is that once the first stimulus check hit our pocketbooks, we immediately did what the government wanted us to do.\u00a0\u00a0Spend.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Implications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s plenty of analysis showing that a 7% savings rate isn\u2019t high enough to provide adequate funding for many households\u2019 retirement goals.&nbsp;&nbsp;The one small bright spot in this data is that with income also higher than ever, the absolute dollar amount of savings is larger than before the pandemic.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s not that much more, though.&nbsp;&nbsp;As a result, the issue is that once again our culture of consumption means that we are giving up future comfort in return for current retail therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certainly every client has a different situation.\u00a0\u00a0That said, it\u2019s quite likely that most banking and brokerage clients are not saving as much as they should and would benefit from any counsel that drives them in this direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a
